A Proverb for the Day (14:34)

“Righteousness exalts a nation, But sin is a disgrace to any people” (Proverbs 14:34 NASB). Should we be concerned about our morals as a nation? Absolutely! This is a discussion of righteousness on a national level. In the Proverbs, righteousness is doing the right thing at any given moment (including morals and ethics). This means taking a stand against abortion (i.e., the slaughter of innocent lives, Proverbs 6:16-17). It means refusing to promote or validate homosexuality as an alternative lifestyle–the Bible calls it unnatural, degrading, indecent, and error (Romans 1:26-27). Above all, it means reversing the removal of God from our society and giving Him the honor and glory He deserves. We must stand against these sins which disgrace our nation. The fact that most of our country apparently does not feel disgrace, shows how calloused the conscience of our nation has become (cf. Ephesians 4:17-19), and how much work we need to do. It starts with prayer (1 Timothy 2:1-4), it continues by living as examples, teaching others to observe everything Jesus has commanded (Matthew 28:18-20), and by using the means given to us by our nation such as voting. Don’t vote with your pocketbook in mind, vote for men of integrity that will guide our country away from its disgrace.
